Nivuru e russu
Description by the artist
Black and red (Nivuru e russu in Sicilian) prevail in this handbag made with crocheted tiles like the blankets of Sicilian grandmothers. Nìvuro di sìccia e “russu comu un ciuri russu comu lu sangu sparsu” (Sicilian for Cuttlefish ink and red like a red flower or like blood– shed red, Rosa Balistreri). Crocheted wool bag, faux leather handle and base, pinstripe fabric lining, inside pocket. Unique as all the bags I made with love and care.

The artwork in the Sicilian culture
By the Governance of Sicilian Artisan Foundation
Black and red are two of the typical colors of ancient Sicilian embroidery. Black like the lava of the Etna volcano and red like the sun and the oranges of Sicily.

Art is the outward expression of an inner monologue. The artist has always been the one who makes the invisible visible".
The Governance also suggests
The objective of the Governance is both to safeguard the traditions and ancient crafts of the people of Sicily, and to sustain economically the Artisans and the Artists, both the real ethno-anthropologists of the country.
