Description by the artist

This artwork is called L’isola del tesoro (the island of treasure). In the dreams of every Sicilian child there is  “a Lapa” (motoape in italian), a magic means of transport more than a flying carpet, who knows why they called it that way: “Ape” (bee) . Perhaps because of its hissing sound in the steep climbs. Inside those three wheels, Sicily used to sell its ice-creams with scorzanera and cinnamon at the exit of the schools and hot panelle (chickpea fritters) and croquettes were served in many corners of the streets. Three wheels like wings (Lorenzo Matassa).

The artwork in the Sicilian culture

By the Governance of Sicilian Artisan Foundation

In this artwork, as if it were a book of Sicilian tales: the moto ape, l’aasu ri mazze (Sicilian for ace of clubs), the sun and the sea. Welcome to Sicily. Blandi’s artworks are characterized by this gumminess that seems to want to accentuate the richness of history, traditions and culture of the island, heritages of which Sicily is so rich that they must become gummy, in Blandi’s vision, to enter all into a  canvas.
